Stayman Winesap Apple Tree (Malus domestica ‘Stayman’)

The Winesap apple is an heirloom variety that produces medium to large apple that is firm, sweet, tart and has a crisp bite. This apple is a favorite and great for eating fresh, in salads, in cider, apple butter, baking and deserts.

Sunlight: Full sun minimum 6 hours per day

Soil: Well-drained, sandy, loamy soil with a pH level 5.0 – 6.8.

Water: Water weekly until established. Water established trees deeply as needed. You may need to water more often in times of extreme heat or drought.

 

The Winesap apple tree is a dependable producer that will produce medium to large fruit that is firm, sweet, tart with a crisp bite. You will harvest the Winesap apples September through November. An extra bonus of the Winesap is that it stores well for about six months. The Stayman Winesap apple is an excellent choice if you are looking for versatility. This apple is a favorite and great for eating fresh, in salads, making cider, apple butter, baking and deserts.

Plant in full sun in well drained loamy soil. The Winesap apple is not self-pollinating and will require cross pollination of another apple variety to achieve fruiting. Gala, Granny Smith, Pink Lady and Golden Delicious are just some of the effective pollinators. Average height 12′ to 15′ and width 12′ to 15′.  USDA hardiness zone 5 – 8.
